Marriage planning, one clear step at a time
Marriage planning can involve conversations about everyday life as well as paperwork, budgets and official requirements. LovHQ’s resources are intended to help couples organise questions and find reliable starting points.
Start with conversations
Before building a checklist, discuss where you expect to live, finances, household responsibilities, family expectations, work, personal space and what you will do if plans change. No checklist can replace a conversation about your particular circumstances.
Marriage planning checklist
- Agree on priorities. Discuss the kind of ceremony or registration you want, approximate guest list, location and what matters most to each person.
- Set a budget. List expected costs, who will pay, payment dates, currency and a reserve for changes. Mark estimates separately from confirmed quotes.
- Choose a timeline. Work backward from your preferred date, allowing time for notice periods, venue availability, documents and travel arrangements.
- Confirm legal requirements. Contact the relevant registry or government authority for the place where the marriage will take place. Verify eligibility, notice periods, identity documents, translations, certificates and whether documents need legalisation.
- Keep document records safe. Store copies securely, limit access to sensitive identity information and keep a note of any original documents required.
- Plan practical life together. Discuss housing, finances, work, household tasks, family commitments, personal space and how decisions will be made.
- Review travel or immigration separately. Marriage registration and permission to enter or live in a country are different processes. Confirm the applicable visa rules with official immigration sources.
- Make a backup plan. Consider delays, missing documents, travel disruption and cancellation terms before making non-refundable bookings.
If you are marrying across borders
Requirements depend on the country, location, nationality and individual situation. Start with the official authority for the place where the marriage will take place and confirm document rules, translation requirements, notice periods and any visa process separately.
Use official sources for legal requirements
Our marriage rules checklist and visa cost calculator are planning aids only. They do not determine eligibility or replace official government instructions or qualified professional advice.
Keep costs visible
List known costs, due dates, currency, who will pay and which amounts still need confirmation. A plan should label estimates clearly and be updated when an official fee or supplier quote changes.
